A used one popped up and I’m really into it. I’m not thrilled about the idea of 18 mpg + premium fuel, but it’s really cool. Same motor as the Mach 1 Mustangs/Mercury Marauder, 4.6L. Over 300 HP and don’t have to worry about the 5.4L.
The one for sale is a Dark Blue one from 05 with only 88k miles. Sounds like it’s been babied. No accidents on carfax. Oh and it’s a hair under $8,000.
What do you think guys?

Just so you know, if you are doing anything other than highway miles, you won’t get close to 18mpg. You can realistically expect around 12. (Past owner of three different Ford Expeditions).

My dad's wife had an 03. He wasn't really fond of it at all. They had a bunch of nagging problems with it, including leaking window seals. He traded it in last year with under 50k on it. That being said, they replaced it with a Navigator (and he drives an F150), so it couldn't have been that bad.

What are you going to use it for?
We have an 05 Expidition at work that we use as a service vehicle. I can’t remember the last time we actually worked on it. Not fast by any means (my Dad’s old Suburban was faster) but I’m not sure which engine it has, could be a sohc 4.6.
Reliability is a check mark on these but do you really need something this big? Also the GM equivalents are overall a bit better. The higher trimmed Chevrolets are on par or nicer than the Lincoln interior wise.
I also wouldn’t jump on this one. I’ve seen a few by me around this price and condition and they seem to be very common, owned by suburban families and used for dropping kids off at school and the occasional road trip.

Different Engine and drivetrain though. I believe the AWD system matches the Mercury Mountaineer’s system plus the upgraded 4.6L

This is based off an Explorer and has a 4.6L not the 5.4L like the Expeditions...
How were your Expeditions though? You keep buying them they must be doing something right.

There’s not a ton of them around, they frankly didn’t build that many of them. And it would be used for the exact same purpose you described at the bottom. Daily driver to take me to work and drop the kid at daycare. Occasional Road Trip - alternating road trip duties with the Jeep Commander.
The Milan I’ve had as a Daily Driver is the smallest vehicle I’ve ever owned. I’m interested in getting back up off the ground. I like the full size GM’s but this is actually smaller than them because it’s based off the Explorer not the Expedition.

Ah, I got confused. I was thinking Expedition based. That’s the Navigator. They’re still reliable. My friend used to have an 05 explorer with a v6 and awd. It treated him well until some fatal (to the car, not him) wheel bearing failure made him buy a Wrangler. Might have been an advance trac issue. Good cars. Great for what you want to do and so much more.
I think I might see more Aviators/ Navigators for sale living in a huge suburban metro area. There are square miles of rich neighborhoods north of Raleigh so I guess it depends on the market.

I’ve had a fuel efficient vehicle for almost 3 years now - Mercury Milan daily driver. It’s also the smallest DD I’ve ever had, I’d like to be back up in the air for my DD.
And the Lifted Jeep Commander with a wimpy 3.7L and full time “4x4” probably still gets worse mileage haha (wife’s DD). And we bought that when gas was almost 4 bucks a gallon.

They’ve announced the new Continental - but for the moment (if you can’t wait), there’s just the MKS, which
clearly
doesn’t have the kind of presence, behemothity and curb weight you need to have in a four-door Lincoln.
Only one solution for the lightly-used market and not the classics market: the Aviator.

Yeah the problem is I don’t think they even cracked 75,000 in sales in the whole lifespan of the vehicle being produced so the market’s not flooded.
I’m outside Detroit in the suburbs so the executives that got a discount on buying it are why they are even around out here in numbers.

We have a 2013 Explorer with the 3.5L v6. While it sounds like the 290 hp should provide plenty of get-up-and-go, in a vehicle so big, it creates more drama than speed. When I stepped on the gas to pass a slow-moving truck, my son was quick to remind me that mom’s explorer wasn’t my car. Yeah, everyone laughed.
We put 1,300 miles on it over the Christmas holidays this year, giving me a chance to track the mileage (my wife doesn’t bother). The majority of the miles were on the highway, although one tank was mostly city driving.
The worst, 16.9 mpg, was on a travel day. It was all highway miles, but there was a significant headwind and we were rolling around 75 mph.
The best was 21.7 mpg. Again, it was all highway miles at ~75 mph, but without the headwind.
The tank that covered all of our city miles netted 18.4 mpg.
Since the 3.5L doesn’t require premium fuel, the 1,300 miles of travel only cost me $113.11. If it did require premium, the trip would have cost $20 more (based on the cost of filling my WRX this morning).

Gotcha.
Yeah I like the size of it and the weirdest complaint about the Mercury Mountaineer (because i could simply find one of those with AWD and V8) is the door handles on the interior. I can’t handle it. My mother in law has one (RWD v6, slow as hell) I just can’t do those door handles.

I'd be interested to see the mileage it gets. I get around 17mpg in a P71 Crown Vic with a 4.6, over 20 on the highway, and regular gas. Also have a 5.4 F150 that seems to get 12mpg no matter what I do. All highway? 12mpg. All city? 12mpg. Leave it idling in my driveway all day? 12mpg.

the problem is that’s a completely different ball game.
1 the 3.5L is useless without turbo’s. 2 that’s on a newer and completely different platform.
That’s built on the Taurus, not on a full real frame.

I’ve been looking at the matchup between the giant Capri I got from Jarod Rose and the 1990 E350 heavy duty Club Wagon 15-passenger in the family, and the Capri has the same curb weight (higher than the base model van), is fractionally wider, fractionally longer (parts of an inch, both cases), and has only 7” shorter wheelbase. Family sedan ~= 15-passenger van, because YOLO, 1959 style.

Big transition for me. My last house was only 5 years old when I bought it (10 when i sold it)
A lot more creaks and moans in this house and shitty wiring. Example: replaced a light switch this weekend - oh thanks guys, didn’t think to ground this? you know, to that nice green screw right there? no? not worried about it? Great.

According to Wikipedia, the Koenigsegg CCR V8 used the same engine. I don’t think it’s relevant, but cool nonetheless.
I really dig Lincoln interiors of that era for some reason, I’d say go for it. My pick would be the rare Kitty Hawk edition.

Not sure what the problem is. We were talking about fuel mileage, not the benefits of body-on-frame versus unibody.
I’m not sure where you are getting the engine information - everything I see online says the ‘05 only came with a 5.4L. Perhaps this one had an engine swap?
Turbo or not, both are rated around 300 hp. The 3.5L has about 50 lb-ft more torque (355 lb·ft vs 255 lb·ft), but with an additional 1,000 lbs of weight, I’m not sure the additional torque will make much difference.
Performance-wise, I’d expect the Lincoln to be somewhat slower; however, it may make neater noises while doing it. I’d also expect it to have worse fuel mileage (EPA estimates are quite a bit lower) and slightly higher operating costs due to the premium fuel requirements.

I have some experience with these, I’ve owned a 2003 Explorer and my mother currently owns a 2004 Aviator. So lets see if I can be of some help here.
The Aviator has the 302hp, 4.6L, 32v v8, unlike the Explorer of the same vintage (239hp, 4.6L, 16v V8) and also unlike the sucessor, the (292hp, 4.6L, 24v v8) - This is important as supposedly the 32v engine was the least reliable of the bunch. We’ve had ours for 6 years now and have yet to encounter an issue with the engine.
Transmission, the 2002 - 2005 Explorers had abysmal transmissions that were prone to failure, mine never did, but it the vehicle didn’t last long enough for it to. They are the 5W55W, 5W55E and the 5W55S in the Aviator. The W has the worst reliability, the E was an attempt to fix it, and sadly I’m not sure about the reliability on the S. The 2006+ Explorers got a revised transmission that fixed all the issues of the previous generation.
Now for the goodies, the Aviator has heated and cooled seats, something the Explorer’s didn’t, and boy do they work wonders. The stock sound system isn’t bad, nor is the rest of the interior.
Ride: Like a cloud, which can be a good or bad thing. These things float, a lot. If you like body roll, you’ll love the Aviator. These are not off-road vehicles, don’t expect to do anything beyond a dirt road in these.
Brakes: Mushy, they will stop, and stop pretty well, but the pedal travel and softness makes you think otherwise.
What should you, look out for?
4wD - 4wd was actually a rarer option on the Aviator, most were sold with rear wheel drive and skinnier tires, traction control was optional. A good majority had no tow pakage or a class 1 tow package, class 3 was also rare.
Rear Windows - The rear door window regulatos were crap, and went out often. They are fairly cheap and easy to fix, but annoying none the less.
Rear Hatch - The Explorer/Aviator/Mounty all have a 2nd smaller hatch for gaining access to the rear cargo area, these were made of plastic below the glass that always cracked, usually right down the center of the logo. It’s purely cosmetic and doesn’t lead to leaking.
Fuel Economy - What fuel economy? LOL
They advertised 18mpg/h on these, they get at best 13.5mpg on premium, and they love to drink it. You’ll be lucky to get 18 highway, with a tail wind, coasting, down a hill. Trust me, been there, done that.
Parking Sensors/ ABS Warnings
These SUVs love to give warnings about parking sensors, ABS, and the TPS. They are not the end of the world, just annoying. The ABS sensor gets dirty quick and likes to give you a warning light, however the brakes work as they should.
Final Viredict: Would I buy it? - Maybe
For $8,000 and low miles it’s a good buy, and an excellent cruiser/family vehicle. Just be aware of what issues you may encounter. If you plan for them, then you’ll be good.

He’s talking about an Aviator, which never offered the 5.4L engine. All the Explorer drivitves came with either a 4.0L v6 or a 4.6L v8. (The Avaitor had only the 4.6L has an engine option) - What you’re looking at is the Navigator, which came with the 5.4L and was based off the bigger Expedition.

Oh it’ll have worse mileage, and definitely worse than the 3.5L V6 in the Taurus based new Explorer.
Bengal55 covered most of my response. it has the hopped up 4.6L V8, the Aviator is built off the old Explorer, not eh Expedition/F150 platform. So it’s also lighter than you think it is.

Ah, I see the error - Aviator, not Navigator.
Let’s see, the Aviator has 302 hp, 300 ft-lbs of torque, and weighs 4,800 lbs. It has a bit more torque, a bit more horsepower, and it only carries about 300 lbs more weight than the new Explorer. I’m surprised at the poor fuel economy (EPA 13 city/ 18 hwy!?!).
It does have about 2,000 lbs greater towing capacity, so that’s a benefit.
It looks like a decent deal given the price and mileage, if you really want an SUV.

Yeah I’m really wanting an SUV. My first 2 daily drivers were SUV’s then I switched to the Milan for the past 3 years and I’m a bit burned out of being down there. I wish I could just trade with my wife for a while, she DD’s a mildly lifted Jeep Commander. That would get my fix (despite having worse gas mileage than this Aviator and only having a V6 - damn does that little V6 have to work hard to move that bigass Jeep) but she hates being low to the ground now and won’t go back.

I have to drive my wife’s occasionally and I’m always looking forward to getting out of it. I thought it might be due to having the entire family crammed in there, but I found I don’t like it even when I’m by myself.
To me, it’s like driving a whale while sitting in its mouth. There’s a dark cavern behind me and it’s wide enough to take up an entire lane. There’s no wiggle room for avoiding potholes. I get uncomfortable just talking about it....
Good luck in your search. If you get this one, perhaps you can drop it a few inches to improve the handling and hop up the 302 a bit. The mileage will suffer, but the hoonage will be outstanding!

I’ve never owned an Expedition or a Navigator so my experience with them is quite limited. My only experience with the 5.4L is the 1999 F150 we used to own. It was a high mileage truck when we acquired it, it ran well, smooth, and was pretty reliable. We got it at 120,000mi and sold it to a neighbor around 150,000mi. However not long after we sold it, it trashed its self. The neighbor still has it, now working on his 3rd engine. Granted that could be in how he maintains and treats it.
While the truck was in our posession we never had an engine related issue.
I’d like to note as well, our Aviator has well over 130,000 miles on it, original engine, rear dif, and transmission.

Haha, I have plenty of hoonage ability in the 68 Montego.
I think if I got it I’d put on a mild exhaust, get some rumble.
People will be very confused.

hahahaha.
Somehow, which we do not understand in any possible way, we got a house that’s almost 1000 sq ft bigger. Built 30+ years before our first house was built, with older less efficient furnace and AC units....
And we have lower utility bills.
Insanity.

If you’re looking for a mid sized truck-based SUV that has some towing ability and have no problem affording the gas even if the cost of fuel doubles, then I say go for it.

As stated before, the Explorer, Mountaineer and Aviator all got the 4.6.
As a previous 4.0L V6 Mountaineer owner, have the transmission checked. All those explorers/mountaineeers/aviators used the same transmission. At 100k they like to shit and quit. I got rid of mine way before that problem, at 73k. I owned mine since new. I only had 1 problem in my time owning it, the idler pulley. 20 bucks and an hour later it was fixed.
I dont know much about the aviators, but if they do use the same Mountaineer AWD, it’s full time. Never turning off, AWD. Like Subarus.
I loved mine, although it loved the gas station more. I live in Oklahoma with it the majority of my time and moved back to Ohio after it sat in storage for 2 years while I was in Japan. I picked it up from storage, drove form STL to Dayton OH, and 500 miles, and after 2 years, it had ZERO problems. I loved my Mountaineer, it was good to me, and I traded it in on my current DD beater Honda Fit. I betrayed that truck lol.

Hahaha.
Well, this is a very different edition of the 4.6L than the Explorer and Mountaineers got. They were SOHC, this is DOHC. Cams everywhere haha. It’s the varied version that appeared in the Mach 1 Mustang and the Marauder. It is in fact the AWD system.
I wonder if I could make an Aviator shaker hood set up....

Yea, never cared for the Aviator. Just too much of a wallet hit for me. Plus I think lincolns are for old people anyway.

I disagree 100% on the old people comment. Its priced competitive if not better than explorers right now.

It’s priced better than v8 4x4 explorers in my market. Obviously with more features too.
